Men's Fashion Trends Spring 2009

Men’s fashion trends change at a slow pace, and suits slowest of all, as suiting and formal-wear trends for men aren’t seasonal and play out over several years. However, 2009 marks a distinct change in the direction of men’s suiting.

The suit of 2009, 2010 and beyond is a fusion between classic tailoring, the classic English looks and the modern masculine silhouette. The slim look is still in, but there is a move away from the “skinny boy” suit towards something a lot more masculine with broad shoulders, a slim waist and slim trousers.

In 2009 and 2010 the double breasted cut, the peak lapel and the 3 piece suit are back. We will see a lot of double breasted peak lapelled 3 piece suits with waistcoats made in the classic fabric patterns.

A slim cut double breasted suit with broad shoulders and a slim waist highlighting the masculine V-shaped body is in. Choose a longer lapel line to convey height and a slimmer waist. The peak lapel is back in fashion but still the notch lapel is a good choice, too. Even though one button jackets are in these days, two (or may be even three) button jackets are a better choice for many men as this will make you look taller and slimmer. Side vents provide a perfect silhouette.

In general, waistcoats and vests are very trendy now and in 2009 we will witness the return of the suit’s classic waistcoat and the three-piece suit. This means that the waistcoat has to be conservative. Preferably the waistcoat should feature a low V-neck and be made of the same fabric as the other pieces of the suit, but if you want something less formal you should stick to the same colour palette and avoid patterns except for stripes. In 2009 dress pants shall be as stylish as they are comfortable.

Two- or three-piece suits with loose pleated trousers and a fitted waistcoat and/or jacket are making a come-back, too, but these trousers are today’s fashion and no long term investment piece. At the fashion scene of informal wear mismatching suits are seen, too, for instance a dark blue jacket worn with grey trousers.

The coming season classic cloth patterns like houndstooth, herringbone, Prince of Wales check, pinstripe and rope-stripe are returning and a high quality woollen fabric in one of these patterns is the perfect choice for your new suit. If you choose super-wool with a thread count between 120 and 150 you can use it all year around. A high quality wool fabric is the perfect choice for suits as it is comfortable to wear, durable and won’t wrinkle much. Cotton is a good choice for the informal summer suit and the fashion suit but it creases.

In 2009 we will see more blue and fewer grey suits but black is still a perfect choice, too. This season’s dress pants are in neutral colours but we will see a lot of colourful shirts (like purple) and ties contrasting the suits.

Generally, men’s fashion 2009 shows a colourful palette with yellow, lavender, pink, blue, sand, green, ivory, grey and orange tones. The trends for men’s casual wear include waistcoats and vest in general, deep V-neck cardigans, floral print for shirts, cuffed shorts, polo shoes and neck scarves adding a bit of contrast colour to the outfit.
